NJ News 09-01-2011 - The New Jersey State Conference of the NAACP will be hosting its Annual Convention Friday-Sunday, September 9-11, 2011 at the Hilton Parsippany Hotel, Parsippany, New Jersey. Honoring NJ Fair Share Housing Advocates and Distinguished Educators who have made significant contributions to New Jersey, this year the oldest and largest civil rights organization is exploring the theme, "Affirming Americas Promise—Youth and Education Taken Seriously ." NJ News 07-03-2011 - The NAACP opposes any legislation that will disproportionately affect the minority communities and endanger the welfare of our representatives from those communities. The NAACP opposes any cuts that will put children at risk; including the slashing of funding for programs designed to reduce child abuse and neglect and the care needed to recover. "The Governor has cut funds to aid cities, removed the funding for the restoration of police and firefighters needed to protect cities like Paterson and Camden; which is currently experiencing a huge increase in violent crimes such as arson. Mr. Christie has reduced their aid by additional $69 million, and in our capital city, Trenton, which had gotten $27 million, now will have to split $10 million with other cities pushing them to budget disaster. NJ News 06-21-2011 - The New Jersey State Conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NJSCNAACP) is strongly opposed to S-2937 because the legislation violates core civil rights principles of just and equality of all people. The proposed legislation will have an adverse impact on people of African Ancestry and other racial and ethnic minorities. Many public unions include a large percentage of minorities who are low wage earners.  Read More

NJ News 05-25-2011 - The NJ Supreme Court ruled that the State's failure to fund the School Funding Reform Act (SFRA) caused "instructionally consequential and significant" harm to at-risk students in districts across the state. The Court also found that the harm to NJ schoolchildren from the funding cut is not a "minor infringement" to their right to a thorough and efficient education, but "a real substantial and consequential blow" to that right. NJ News 03-30-2011 - The Officers and Members of the Executive Committee of the New Jersey State Conference of the NAACP are deeply saddened by the passing of Irene Hill-Smith. From 1966 to 1984, Ms. Hill--Smith served as President of the New Jersey State Conference of the NAACP (New Jersey NAACP). Joining the NAACP in 1957, Irene Hill Smith was elected President of the Gloucester County Branch in 1963. She served as NAACP National Vice President from 1967 to 1979. She was one of New Jersey's most highly esteemed 20th Century civil rights activists, as she served in the movement with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other prominent leaders. Read More

NJ News 12-07-2010 - The New Jersey State Conference of the NAACP (NJSCNAACP) strongly opposes the deregulation of public employment though proposed “Civil Service opt outs.” About 200 of the New Jersey’s 566 towns hire employees using the Civil Service system that the state created more than one hundred years ago to prevent excessive political patronage. Civil Service rules require that new hires be chosen according to "merit and fitness," determined partly by competitive exams. Read More

NJ NAACP 06-18-2010: (Trenton, NJ) — The New Jersey State Conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NJSCNAACP) appreciates the special recognition of “Juneteenth” Day by Governor Christopher Christie because the elimination of slavery changed the legal status of people of African ancestry in the United States of America. Gov. Chris Christie, Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno and Attorney General Paula Dow are commended for conducting this proclamation ceremony on June 18, 2010 in the State House.

NJ News 06-05-2010 - NJ State NAACP Opposes Voucher Legislation S-1872—"Opportunity Scholarship Act" -
The New Jersey State Conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (New Jersey State NAACP) adamantly reasserts its organizational opposition to the creation of voucher schools that are supported by public dollars, such as those described in current Senate Bill S-1872. Titled the "Opportunity Scholarship Act", this legislation was introduced by State Senators Ray Lesniak (D-20th district) and Tom Kean, Jr. (R-21st district). The New Jersey State NAACP urges all legislators to thoroughly educate the tax-paying citizenry before this legislation advances any further.

National NAACP News 05-17-2010: The NAACP in coalition with other civil rights groups filed a class action lawsuit today challenging Arizona’s new law requiring police to demand "papers" from people they stop who they suspect are not authorized to be in the U.S.   If an individual is caught without papers they can be arrested and jailed.   The extreme law, the coalition charged, invites the racial profiling of people of color, violates the First Amendment and interferes with federal law.

National NAACP News 05-15-2010: NAACP ENDORSES SUPREME COURT NOMINEE ELENA KAGAN  - Hollywood, Florida—The NAACP, the nation’s oldest and largest civil rights organization, unanimously endorsed Elena Kagan, President Barack Obama’s choice for the Supreme Court, today at their quarterly board meeting.

-  The NJSCNAACP will join a coalition of civil rights and advocacy organizations on Monday December 7, 2009 at 10am at the New Jersey State House Annex Court Yard (West State Street) to RALLY IN SUPPORT OF PUBLIC SAFETY AND PRISON RE-ENTRY BILLS: A4197-Strengthening Women and Families Act; A4198-Post- Release Employment Act; A4199-Administration of Correctional Facilities Act; A4201-Reduction of Recidivism Act; A4202-Education and Rehabilitation Act; A4203-Criminal Penalties Act.  The NJSCNAACP is convinced that this long overdue reform legislation will have a huge impact on the rehabilitation of inmates and will lead to significant improvements in the quality of life for inmates, their families and most importantly, the communities in which they will live.

NJ NAACP Awards Gala - HonoreesThe New Jersey State Conference of the NAACP will hold its 2009 Annual State Convention from Friday, September 18 through Sunday, September 20, 2009, at the Somerset Double Tree Hotel in Somerset, New Jersey. Celebrating the NAACP Centennial (1909 – 2009) and its theme, "NAACP 100 YEARS: BOLD DREAMS – BIG VICTORIES" the New Jersey Unit of America’s oldest and largest civil rights organization will host an Awards Gala on Saturday, September 19, 2009, at 7:30 PM. Tickets for the Centennial Gala are $75.00 in advance, and $100.00 at the door. On the occasion of the NAACP Centennial, a large number of awards will be given to a diverse and amazing group of civil rights advocates in New Jersey.

In fact, former Governor Jim Florio signed a hate crime bill into law during his administration. This form of domestic terrorism is designed to intimidate whole communities on the basis of personal and immutable characteristics – and can spark widespread neighborhood conflicts, even damaging the very fabric of our society.

National News 06-19-2009U.S. Senate Approves Apology For Slavery - Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) today announced Senate approval of a resolution apologizing for the enslavement and racial segregation of African-Americans. The New Jersey Senator is an original cosponsor of the measure.
